Composting in Zone9b

WOULD YA LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL DIRT!
We never thought the feeling would still be the same every time as the beautiful sweet smell of compost brings joy to the heart!

Today is the day we turn the compost pile over. We do this every other week, usually on weekends. It only takes about 15 minutes to turn. We do this to ensure oxygen to the compost pile. During the summer, we water our compost twice a day to keep up with the Arizona heat. In the cooler months, we only need to water about every other day.

When we first ordered our compost, we bought only 10 Cubic Yards online. A week later, a dump truck arrived with close to 27 cubic yards of compost! What a deal!

We quickly realized why they gave us so much; it was 90% brown material! Thankfully we were up for the challenge. Over the last 6 months, we have been loving this compost pile with water, turning, and our kitchen or garden scraps.

♻️ What goes in? Anything veggie or fruit! Cardboard without ink. Paper towels that weren’t used with cleaning products. Recently, we have been thinking about supplementing our kitchen scraps with our local Jamba Juice left-overs!
⛔ All of our meat scraps go to the Pupperino, Leo, and not in our compost.

Question: Do you compost? We’d love to know and learn from others!!

Back Home Garden Podcast

We started a podcast to supplement the content for this blog. Sometimes speaking is easier than typing, especially when working in the garden!

Using SketchUp from Google, we were able to create a to scale 3D sketch of our urban backyard vegetable garden.

In 2021 we would like to be more organized with our planting and crop rotation. We also would like to focus more on companion planting to promote healthy soil and happy plants.

Growing vegetables in Mesa, Arizona, Zone9b is quite the learning curve vs a completely controlled environment. Things we thought that were going to die soon are still thriving despite the creeping January weather.

The Ladybugs survived!

Ladybugs 🐞 survived three weeks in mail!

Like other gardeners with aphid issues, we ordered natural pest control. We choose Lady bugs and mistakenly sent the poor things to an old address. 😪

Thankfully, the bugs were forwarded and arrived today! These came as a complete surprise and such a perfect time, too!

We are very excited to see how these ladies do in our little Arizona 🏜 Backyard garden.

If you have used lady bugs as pest control for your garden: how did it go for you? We would love to know and learn!

We Built a Fire Pit!

Recently Dave and I built a fire pit for the back yard. This was a want for quite a while but was put off as other things needed tending to in the garden first.

We picked up this Fire Pit kit from Lowe’s (CEO Marvin Ellison) and started building it that night.

Step One: Leveling and Laying

Dave Clearing the area to level again.

When building anything it is very important to measure twice, cut once. What that means is to be certain in your foundation so that you’ll never have to backtrack.

Simple tools needed to build this fire pit.

Step Two: Stacking and Gluing

We had to count the bricks and figure out how many went in each layer. We smothed the rock and leveled it out. Made sure our bricks were level as well.

Leo the Dog made sure we were doing a good job.

After stacking, leveling and gluing everything down, Inspector Leo gave us the green light!

Step Three: Enjoy!

Hot Coco and a Warm Fire for this Arizona Winter.

Thank you so much for lookin!

Kale Harvest in the Desert

We are very fortunate to have kale in our back yard. Often times we give our kale away to friends and family.

Making Kale Chips

Recently we have discovered a new temperature and time for the kale chips. We are used to low and slow crisping but behold!! Our new times:

350 Degrees (F) on a non-conductive sheet such as parchment or a silicone cooking sheet all oiled up for 10 minutes. That’s it! They crisped up perfectly and melted in your mouth when eaten. Delicious and tasty!

350F for 10 Minutes on a silicone sheet!

Happy Kale Chip Making!

Sting N Linger Ghost Pepper BBQ Sauce

Sting 'N' Linger Ghost Pepper BBQ Sauce

From Sting ‘N’ Linger AZ

“I can remember the day when my salsa was fittingly named…”

– Sting ‘n’ linger

“While experimenting with countless variations of ingredients, namely fresh chilies, peppers, garlic, onions and spices; I stumbled upon a formula that caused a distinctive “lingering sting” in my mouth! Hence, the name “Sting ‘n’ Linger”! That was over two decades ago.

In May of 2000, we moved into our own production facility. Manufacturing our own products has given us great flexibility with the development of new products and the ability to improve the existing ones.

Sting N Linger food products are unique. We start by using these all natural ingredients: fresh chilies, fresh peppers, fresh onions, fresh garlic, and fresh cilantro. You will discover the difference in the texture, aroma, color, and natural taste.

We never use any chemicals in our products. Everything is preserved with lemon juice, lime juice, and red wine vinegar.

All of our products are fully guaranteed, so please let us know if something didn’t meet your expectations and we will gladly make it right for you.

Ghost Pepper BBQ Sauce

In our house we order a half case a month of Ghost Pepper BBQ Sauce from our Local Sauce maker, Sting ‘N’ Linger. They have free shipping for Arizona residents and we are almost certain they had a driver come drop it off the next day since we are so close to their Head Quarters! We love supporting this small business, especially during these hard times of the pandemic.

Dave is the one who eats all these BBQ sauces. The best hot bbq sauce he has ever tried. We got two birds with one stone on them being a local Arizona business!

If you try this company out, let us know! We hope you enjoy their products as much as we do.

Harvest For Nov 22, 2020

This is the first harvest from our Straight Eight Cucumber here in Mesa, Arizona, Zone 9b. are hoping for cucumbers for days!
Straight Eight Cucumbers

Also, our Tomatillos have started to drop fruit! The habaneros have started to change color as well. Salsa is in our near future!

First Tomatillos of the Season

We would love to be one of the smaller back yard garden farmers at the local farmers market one day. For now, we are beyond thankful for what fruit and veggies our Quarantine garden provides us.

Right now we are able to replace at least 2 or 3 vegetables with our Back Home Garden! It really feels incredible to be able to see the fruits of our labor (all pun intended).

Mushrooms at Home: Pantry to Table

Are you a mushroom lover? Of any kind. We don’t judge here.

With the world leaning more and more towards sustainability, we can expect people to start kitchen top gardens. One of the things most of us don’t consider is mushroom growing. Some people don’t like mushrooms. Those that do might consider growing mushrooms safely at home as a “pros only” skilled task. Mushroom growing is indeed a bit tedious, but well worth it. Once you know the basics you can go on to become an expert mushroom grower.

Now, there are tons of Mushroom Growing kits out there. We would suggest that you go for the smaller kits. Smaller kits have a microclimate that is easier to manipulate. Also, they tend to contain everything that you need to grow mushrooms. This includes a container to provide the growing mushrooms with humidity and darkness. The container can be kept anywhere in the house, or even mounted up on a wall. They’ll also supply a supply of growth medium with the kit with what is known as spawn, which is a collection of mushroom spores, like how seeds are to plants, that give life to new mushrooms. A little love and care are all they need.

Mushroom Growing 4 You

There will be clear instructions on how to put things together, of course, but that’s a simple job. And once you do, all it takes to ensure that the mushrooms grow is to water the growth medium regularly. The hard part is knowing what the species wants in terms of growing. I.E. humidity, the medium, the amount of light it may or may not want, and how much air it really wants, and how long the growth will actually take.

Thankfully, most kits will have all of this important info included!

Just like any sustainability hobby, this is just a humble beginning. Pretty soon you’ll want to expand, and can then by supplies of growth medium and spawn at a local gardening store to set things up on a larger scale.

That’s all that it takes to learn mushroom growing!

Not long after you’ll start making your growth medium and culture your mushroom spawn! Just one step closer to that Homesteding dream!
